Cranes are huge
machinery used in construction of huge structures. The most common type of
crane is the tower crane but there is another type of crane which is called a
Luffing crane or more commonly a ‘level luffing crane’.
The difference
between two cranes is in how they work and what work they are used for. Tower
cranes are simple machines which allow workers to lift large and heavy things
and place them in different places. Tower cranes do not have too much mobility
and are not very accurate.
Due to their simple mechanism they are used to move
weight and place it in places where it may be used.
Luffing cranes
are required and used where more accuracy is required. A great example is
shipbuilding because in shipbuilding the work area is relatively smaller and
things need to be placed in the right place. While a tower crane is a simple
arm which lifts weight a Luffing crane is uses a ‘pinch’ design which makes
sure that the hook carrying the weight stays in the same level.
This allows
more accuracy as the distance can easily be measured and whatever is being
transported can be lifted to a correct height and then moved while staying at
that height.
