What is a Tower Crane?

Any big development happening anywhere in the world needs a tower crane. A tower crane is a machinery which allows builders and developers to haul and move large amounts of weight. They are called ‘tower’ cranes because they are usually of a great height as they need to be bigger than whatever is being constructed. Tower cranes come in different shapes and sizes but they commonly include a hoist, some chains or wire ropes and sheaves.

Tower cranes are a necessity because, for example, when constructing a 30 floor building a developer will need to transport things from the bottom of the construction to the top floor. If a large amount of bricks or a huge metal beam is required on the 27th floor of the building then machinery is going to be required in order to move it from the ground to the 27th floor.

Tower cranes contain many sophisticated parts and some simple parts. For example the controlling operator’s cab contains all the controls which allow the operator to move the tower crane. On the tower crane you will also see huge concrete blocks on one side of the crane’s ‘arm’. The purpose of these concrete blocks is to balance the crane as otherwise it might just fall on the side the arm happens to be on at that time.
